LASIK vs SMILE Pro
Standard LASIK creates a corneal flap, while SMILE Pro removes a small lenticule through a tiny keyhole incision with no flap. They differ in incision size, recovery pattern and who they suit — our surgeons assess your cornea to advise which fits.
CLEAR vs SMILE Pro
CLEAR is another small-incision lenticule extraction method, similar in concept to SMILE Pro (ZEISS SMILE) but performed on a different laser platform. The shared idea is flapless lenticule removal; differences lie in the device and the clinical nomogram behind each. We perform SMILE Pro on the ZEISS system (ATOS femtosecond laser with CenTrax®).
How each procedure works
SMILE PRO — flapless precision
A single femtosecond laser shapes a thin lens of tissue (a lenticule) inside the cornea, which the surgeon removes through a tiny 2–4 mm opening — no flap is created. Less disruption to the corneal nerves tends to mean less dry eye and a quick return to daily life.
SMILE LASIK — a proven standard
Two lasers work in sequence: the femtosecond laser lifts a thin corneal flap, the excimer laser reshapes the tissue beneath, and the flap is repositioned. With a long track record and a broad treatment range, it remains an excellent, well-understood choice.

Common questions
Is SMILE PRO simply better for everyone?
No — “better” depends on your eyes and lifestyle. SMILE PRO shines for dry-eye-prone, athletic, and high-screen-use patients thanks to its flapless design. For many others, SMILE LASIK is an equally excellent choice with a longer track record. The right answer is individual.
Could either procedure need a touch-up later?
Enhancements are uncommon with both. SMILE PRO has a slightly higher enhancement tendency than LASIK because refining a flapless eye is more delicate, but primary results are excellent for both. Your surgeon discusses this with you based on your eyes.
Which one hurts more?
Neither is painful. Numbing drops are used throughout, and most patients describe only pressure during the brief laser step. SMILE PRO’s smaller opening often means slightly less irritation afterward.
How long do the results last?
Both reshape the cornea permanently. Age-related reading changes (presbyopia, usually after the mid-40s) can still occur in time, but that’s a natural change unrelated to the surgery itself.
Can I have LASIK now and SMILE PRO later?
It’s best to choose carefully from the start, because a LASIK flap can affect future options. Both procedures can usually be enhanced later when appropriate — your surgeon will map out what’s right for your eyes.
